Leaflets were distributed in three districts of Yala yesterday, warning local Muslims to stop working on weekends or face grisly consequences.
The leaflets, written in Malayu, were found in Yaha, Raman and Muang districts, urging local residents to stop working on Saturdays and Sundays or they would have their ears cut off. They also asked Muslims to stop sending their children to study at state-run schools.

The rebellion in Thailand’s Muslim south could take a sharp turn for the worse with the state of emergency introduced recently. Restrictions on basic freedoms will probably not curb the violence. The question is rather who will curb the excesses of the Thai security forces that in turn feed the insurgency.

Thailand declares emergency across Muslim provinces
BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand declared emergency rule across virtually the whole of its Muslim south in a surprisingly tough move to reign in a raging insurgency.
Invoking new powers, the government declared an emergency in Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces plus four districts in neighbouring Songkhla province, where at least 810 people have died in violence since January 2004.
