Lt-Gen Ongkorn, also director of the Southern Border Provinces Peace-building Command, conceded he had not expected the attacks to spill over to Songkhla as it is not normally a major target of rebels.

BANGKOK, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon Wednesday said that most of the 130 Thai Muslims who fled to Malaysia from a southern province last year were not willing to return home for the time being. Kantathi said the refugees indicated to the Thai authorities that they were not ready to return to their villages despite an assurance by the government to guarantee their safety. He told reporters here today that the Thai government respected their decision and would not force them to return.

Bomb kills former insurgent and man shot dead in South

A bomb went off near a DTAC mobile-phone tower yesterday morning, killing a confessed former insurgent. Elsewhere another person died and two others were injured during the latest round of attacks in the Muslim-majority South. Manor Binyasing, 63, a cattle-herder and an erstwhile Muslim insurgent who turned himself in to authorities a decade ago, was killed as a five-kilogram bomb went off near a DTAC tower.
